Remus J. Miserendino Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Remus ("Ray") Joseph Miserendino of Mount Vernon, was peacefully and mercifully called home on March 22, 2022. Born on February 21st, 1926, he celebrated his 96th birthday with visits from his family and his favorite thing of all, cake and sweets! For over 2 years, he was well taken care of at the New York State Veterans Home in Montrose where he charmed all of the hard working nurses and staff, making him feel right at home. He is now with the love of his life, Annette Miserendino (née Carpiniello), who predeceased him in April of 2016. Remus was born in Mount Vernon, New York on February 21st, 1926 to the late Marie and Joseph Miserendino and had two older siblings Albert Rigas and Reneé Frank (née Rigas), who predeceased him. He attended Edison High School in Mount Vernon and at 18, he received his draft notice and joined the United States Army in August of 1944 where he was proud to fight for his country in WWII. After basic training he was stationed in Central Europe, where he valiantly fought in combat as a private in basic infantry, was an accomplished rifleman and served as an auto mechanic, all with the 255th Infantry Regiment, Company B, 63rd Division (Blood and Fire). In July of 1946, he received his honorable discharge and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal, the EAME Campaign Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Bronze Star. Upon returning home after the war at age 20, he met the girl of his dreams, Annette, who was 16. Four years later, in June of 1950, with the blessing of his soon to be in-laws, William and Mary Carpiniello, they were married and began their lives together residing at Colonial Village in the Fleetwood section of Mount Vernon. They were married for 65 beautiful years. They were blessed with four adoring children, Roy Miserendino (Joan McDonald) of Connecticut, Donna Sousa Caplan, of North Carolina, David Miserendino of Florida and Marie Zambardi (Mark Hunt) of New Rochelle. In the 1960's he began his career with Westchester Supply Company aka All Appliance Parts, in Yonkers and continued to serve in the Army National Guard with the 42nd Military Police Company for 3 years. During the same decade, he served as a committee member and eventually Scoutmaster of Mount Vernon Boy Scout Troop 18 with his oldest son Roy. He was very proud to tell people how active he was in scouting and is remembered fondly by many who grew up with him in the Boy Scouts. In 1974, Remus joined the City of Mount Vernon Volunteer Fire Department where he actively served for many years. Just another example of his selfless service to others. He remained a member of the Volunteer Fire Service until his recent passing. In later years, after a well-deserved retirement from All Appliance Parts, this natural salesman, still unwilling to relax was asked to begin working with the Westchester Gun and Uniform Store in Elmsford, NY where he learned tailoring and customizing of uniforms for local police and fire departments. He was admired by all customers for his rich army, weaponry and fire department skills. Remus and Annette loved to travel to many WWII B255 63rd Infantry reunions all over the country, meeting and reminiscing with old army buddies and making new friends who enriched both of their lives. They loved attending local concerts and they both volunteered for many years at the Lake Isle Senior Center in Eastchester where they made so many new friends. He is remembered by all for his work ethic, great sense of humor, kind heart and as a dedicated husband and family man. He was a true gentleman. Remus is survived by his 4 children, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren who were blessed to spend so much time with him through the years. He was also beloved by his siblings-in-law, Marie Martinez, of Yorktown Heights and her husband Ramon (Ray), with whom he shared a birthday and predeceased him in December of 2020, Richard and Suzanne Carpiniello of Somers, William Carpiniello (Anna Marie 1936-2009) of Lyme, CT. And also by his former daughter-in-law Doreen Miserendino and also former son in law, Stephen Zambardi of Hastings, 4 nieces and nephews and their spouses and 6 great nieces and nephews. His family was everything to him and he made sure he expressed how blessed he felt up until his last days on earth. A celebration of his life will be held at the Yorktown Funeral Home, 945 E. Main Street, Shrub Oak on June 5th, 2022.
