Helen "Nanny" Avery was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She left this world after living a beautiful life on January 7, 2021 at age 85. Helen was always surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest. She was born to Edward and Hannah Burke on February 19, 1935 in White Plains, NY. Helen married John Avery on October 29, 1956. The loving couple just celebrated 65 amazing years together. Helen is survived by her husband, John; a son, John Avery; 6 daughters: Barbara Crowell, Carolyn Brim, Dianne Quealy, Joanne Zimbaldi, Theresa Cox, Kim Hobby; a nephew, Eugene Tompkins; daughter-in-law, Lois Avery; 5 son-in-laws: Eddie Brim, Thomas Quealy, Augie Zimbaldi, Mike Cox, Carl Hobby; 2 sisters: Carol Cancro and Terry Tompkins; a brother Edward Burke; 20 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Helen loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family. She was a homemaker and cared for neighborhood children throughout her life. Her greatest pride was her children and grandchildren who she lived for. Helen was inspiration to all, with a heart that radiated love and warmth to everyone in her life. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Helen. She loved decorating her house for each holiday, especially Christmas. Her home was always welcoming and filled with so much laugher and joy. She had an uncanny ability to find happiness in her daily activities. Helen never missed a birthday card, loved to shop, and host large family gatherings. Her pleasant and caring personality was contagious to everyone she met. A wake is scheduled from 1-5pm on Sunday, January 10th at the Yorktown Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 11th - 11:15am at Holy Spirit Church in Cortlandt Manor. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Colon Cancer Foundation to honor Helen's late #1 son-in-law, James N Crowell.
